The Indian Subcontinent: Facts you should know.

The Indian subcontinent is the geographical region comprising most of historical India, currently divided between the countries of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. For cultural reasons, the island states of Sri Lanka and the Maldives are also often considered part of the subcontinent. The surface of the Indian Subcontinent covers about 4,480,000 km².

Sometimes called simply the Subcontinent, because it is the only area of the world to which this qualification applies, the region was known in the West as India until 1947, when the partition of the British colony meant the division of territory between the states of India and Pakistan.

Subsequently, the eastern part was renamed Bangladesh. Many people in Pakistan and Bangladesh reject the term "Indian subcontinent" because they consider that the adjective "Indian" should apply only to the present state of the Indian Union. An alternative name for the region is South Asia or South Asia.

In geological terms the region is considered a subcontinent because it is based on a differentiated tectonic plate, the Indian plate, originally a small continent that collided with the Eurasian plate, giving rise to the Himalayan mountain range and to the Tibetan plateau. Today, the Indian plate continues to move northwards, which makes the Himalayas continue to grow.

The Indian Subcontinent is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. About 1.5 billion people, a quarter of the world's population, live in the region. The population density of 305 people per square kilometer is seven times higher than the world average.

According to a UN study, the population of India will surpass that of China in 2030, with about 1.4 billion people, since birth control in China is very strict whereas in India, a democracy, Births are ignored by most of the population. All this in a territory of 3 million km², the third part of China.

That same study predicts that in the year 2050 will live in India 1.6 billion of the 9 billion people that the planet will have, and that between China and India will have 50% of the world population. If we got there until then.

As I am not very friendly with the mass crowds of people, I am going to travel by the subcontinent before it is too crowded, although remembering the photos that are seen of the Indian trains literally filled to the roof, I think I will arrive a little late.
