Sri Lanka is a wonderful country with a huge amount of attractions to offer travelers, spectacular natural landscapes, delicious cuisine, a rich history and charming villages.

No doubt that it is a perfect place to spend a pleasant holiday, but there are some interesting facts about Sri Lanka that maybe you should know before your trip to enjoy it better.


1. Sri Lanka was known by the Portuguese name Ceylon until 1972.

2. Although it is known worldwide for tea, this plant arrived in the country only in 1867.

3. The first woman to become "Prime Minister" of any country in the world was the Sri Lankan Sirimavo Bandaranaike, serving for three terms: 1960-1965, 1970-1977 and 1994-2000.



4. Sigiriya is a palace dug in the rock of an extinct volcano. This fortress is among the most beautiful places on the planet, surrounded by extensive gardens and water reservoirs. It is also known as the Lion's Rock because it is built on an extinct volcano and through the entrance carved into the mountain flanked by enormous lion's feet. Its gardens are among the oldest that are preserved. It was built as royal palace of King Kassapa I (477-495 AD). The palace was abandoned around 1155.

5. Sri Lanka has one of the largest orphanages for elephants in Asia. Some companies are responsible for recycling the elephant excrement to make ecological paper, a task that is well accepted.


6. Sri Lankan fishermen use an ancestral method of fishing of unknown origin, which consists in nailing a pole 3 or 4 meters high on the seabed, so that it protrudes 2 meters above sea level. The thin pole counts with a perpendicular bar that serves like support to the fisherman that can remain up to two hours still and in silence so as not to frighten the fish.
